Her rest ended almost before it began. Warran entered what felt like only a few moments later, bowing and scraping as he did. She shook her head, but it face was pressed too hard to the dirt of her tent to notice.

“I’ve failed you,” he said.

When he finally looked up, she gestured for him to rise. He did, although hesitantly. He looked on the verge of issuing a very long-winded apology when she cut him off with a sharp gesture.

“It’s forgiven.”

He looked doubtful, but finally acquiesced without complaint. “Tiafel has called a council, and your presence is requested.”

Samora wanted nothing more than to return to sleep, but the urge wasn’t as strong as it had been before. Although Warran blamed himself, Samora figured there was enough blame to go around. She’d purposefully avoided the others, so when she’d needed them, they hadn’t even known.

She didn’t want to be surrounded by people day in and day out, but the world had taught her how foolish it was to keep so much distance. She nodded, and Warran was relieved. He backed out of the tent, saying he’d wait until she was ready.

She threw the covers off and quickly stretched. Lenon’s healing was remarkable, and it took her a while to simply believe she was whole, that her limbs were all still attached and capable of everything she’d been able to do before the encounter. Of all that she’d witnessed over the past weeks, it was this that left her speechless.

Destruction was simple. Every child with a torch was capable of burning down a house. Most uses of adani were nothing but that childish urge to devastate writ large. As impressive as Harald was, when it came to adani, he was little more than a bigger child with a bigger torch.

Samora shook her head, knowing she wasn’t being fair to the giant. He was a caring leader who did everything in his power to keep his people safe. His use of adani might be crude, but it had likely saved more lives than Samora could imagine.

Still, destruction didn’t impress her. But to bring back to life that which teetered on the edge of death? Lenon’s skill was sublime.

Such were her thoughts when she joined the council. Many of the warriors she recognized from the meetings prior, but it was the new arrival who captured her attention. Tiafel introduced her as a wandering warrior, but Samora already knew her name.

Karla was shorter than Samora remembered, but she’d been lying, broken, on the ground the first time they met. Her fiery eyes matched her vivid hair, but when she looked toward Samora, it was as though she looked through instead of at.

Mother had once told her that those who wielded adani the most were often shaped by it, though Samora had yet to meet anyone who fit the description.

Until now. The unnatural color of Karla’s eyes clued Samora in, but that was hardly the most unsettling detail about her. That honor went to her hair, which swayed gently even though there was no breeze.
